Cufflinks are decorative buttons or pieces of jewellery used to fasten the sides of a shirt cuff. While they’re not mandatory, a nice pair of cufflinks adds style and sophistication to any formal look. Whether you’ve recently purchased cufflinks or received a pair as a gift, you might be new to this traditional piece of men’s vintage jewellery. Here are three tips on how to wear antique cufflinks.
Reflect Your Personal Style
There are many different styles of cufflinks. Some antique cufflinks are basic and simple, while others are extremely detailed, made of precious metals, and gemstones. Although it is fine jewellery, it’s possible to find a pair that reflects your personal style and taste. In other words, you don’t have to wear fancy cufflinks featuring diamonds and sapphires. You can still be classy by sporting a pair of simple, solid gold cufflinks.
Buy the Right Shirt
You can’t wear cufflinks with just any type of shirt. The right type of shirt for cufflinks is a dress shirt with double cuffs, or a French shirt. A dress shirt with double cuffs features long cuffs without buttons. This type of shirt has holes on each side in which you insert and secure the cufflinks.
Wear Them to Formal Events
It matters when and where you wear your cufflinks. As mentioned above, cufflinks are fine jewellery and therefore should be worn to special events. Formal events such as weddings, business events, and galas are all appropriate places to wear cufflinks. While you want to look your best, overdressing to an event can be just as disastrous as under dressing for one. So bust out your fancy cufflinks when the occasion calls for them and you will fit right in.
